Farewell to Basil

This is certainly not a tragedy, but a bit of family sadness that I feel I can share with my online friends. Today I had to put my cat, Basil, to sleep. We are terribly sad to lose him, but found that after 14 long years, he was in the final stages of congestive heart failure. To spare him the misery of the final days, I set him free.

My daughter and I are taking it hard. We had him before she was born. He was my favorite birthday present ever, and brought me joy each and every day. We miss him greatly.

Farewell, Basil...

  1. RIP Basil. I totally sympathize with you. We had to have one of our cats put to sleep when I was about 14 years old, and it was like losing a human relative. To this day it still makes me sad, but you'll have memories to last a lifetime!

  2. I agree, it does feel like losing a human relative, which is a little odd, and I have the best memories. I was particularly bonded with this little guy. I appreciate your sympathy. I am sure your little kitty will always be in your heart. If my 9 year old could just understand that, too. Thank you, Patrice.

  4. Sorry for your loss. I know how it is to lose a pet! They are so much part of the family. He was an awfully pretty kitty! And I am sure he is thankful for all those years you took care of him, especially in his declining years.

  6. Erica, I'm so sorry for your loss. :( I've never had a pet, so I can only imagine how hard this must be. I'll be thinking of you...

  7. Thanks guys! It's been two weeks now. Still sad mostly in the evening when I am not as busy, but it's getting better. Basil was certainly an extra special little guy in my heart. Thanksfully, I have a girl cat (she's old, too) to help me get through this. She's very grumpy though, so it's not the same as my sweet Basil. Thanks again for the words of sympathy.

  8. Dear Erica,
you commented my cat the day before and noticed how much she looks like your Basil. It really is amazing how much they look like each other! We love our little black-dotted lady very, very much and it touches me to read how deeply you loved your Basil.I whish you all the best and I hope you can keep him in loving memory without painfully missing him!
    Love, Judith
